2011 Red Tie-Black Gown Gala
The 4th
Annual Red Tie-Black Gown Gala was held at Bishop Byrne
Middle and High School on Saturday, March 5th,
with record attendance, great food, and abundant
entertainment, including a live and silent auction. With
the theme Caribbean Nights, the bright colors, beautiful
tropical floral centerpieces donated by Blooming Arbors, and
the incredible sounds of the Northwest Mississippi Community
College Steel Band set the mood for a fun and lively event.
More than 200 guests mixed and mingled as they bid on a
large array of silent auction items, then settled in for
dinner, provided by Something Different Catering, and
enjoyed the home-grown story of Curtis Weathers, special
guest speaker and Bishop Byrne alum, NFL Linebacker, and
founder and principal of Memphis Academy of Health
Sciences. Guests were then treated to a touching video of
Bishop Byrne students before opening their hearts and
wallets for the Live Auction. VIP guests at the event
included Bishop J. Terry Steib, Dr. Mary McDonald,
Superintendent of Schools, Janet Danato, Associate
Superintendent of Schools, and City Councilman, Harold
Collins. By the end of the night a record $14,000 had been
raised to support the academic programs and student
scholarship fund at Bishop Byrne. Andrea Tuggers, Bishop
Byrne parent and 2011 Red Tie-Black Gown Gala Chair,
expressed her delight with the evening, saying, “This was
the best gala I can remember, with so many people and
everyone having such a good time. I’m ready to do it again
next year and we’ll make it even bigger and better!”
